HP StoreVirtual 4000
In 2012, HP introduced the third generation of storage arrays based on their LeftHand acquisition. The HP StoreVirtual 4000 platform is the successor of the P4000 (P4300 and P4500 G2) arrays. SAN /IQ, the core software that makes the platform unique, has been renamed LeftHand OS as of version 10.5.

The StoreVirtual appliances have been updated to utilize HP's Gen8 Proliant Server hardware (for example, you will notice the disk drives using the new Smart Carrier design.)
More Flexible Configuration
The StoreVirtual 4000 series is offered in many different SKUs. Nodes can be purchased with as few as (4) disk drives and as many as 25 disk drives. Some models are shipped "half populated," leaving the door open to install more disk drives. No longer are you restricted to (8) drives (P4300) or (12) drives (P4500.) Furthermore, there are no longer any starter bundles ("Starter SANs.") In the past, HP pricing would encourage the purchase of nodes in pairs. Now, customers feel less pressure to buy nodes in pairs when adding on. (For example, starting a cluster of 4 nodes to 5.)
Fibre Channel (FC) Connectivity
The HP StoreVirtual Platform now supports 8Gb FC front-end connectivity. This is great for customers that like to isolate their storage traffic on a separate fabric than their IP traffic (and, of course, customers that have a significant infrastructure investment in Fibre.) Note that only FRONT-END traffic can be Fibre. Backend traffic (inter-node communication) still must be done via 1Gb or 10Gb Ethernet.
More Horsepower
The P4300 G2 and P4500 G2 shipped with Quad Core Xeon CPUs with 8GB and 12GB of RAM, respectively. The new StoreVirtual nodes all ship with 6-Core CPUs, and more importantly, up to 64GB of RAM. The extra RAM and CPU power will help speed up I/O requests during local and remote snapshot windows.

HP LeftHand Operating System was known as SAN/IQ prior to release 10.5. HP StoreVirtual (3rd Generation) and P4300 / P4500 / P4800 / P4900 G2 products can be updated to run LeftHand OS 10.5. A patch is available here for enable remote copy to older nodes that cannot be upgraded to 10.5
