High-speed desktop connectivity. Cisco 500 Series switches can quickly and securely connect
employees working in small offices with one another and with all of the servers, printers, and other
devices they use. High performance and reliable connectivity help speed file transfers and data
processing, improve network uptime, and keep your employees connected and productive.
Secure wireless connectivity. Cisco 500 Series switches work with Cisco and third-party wireless
solutions to extend the reach of your network. Employees can work productively from conference
rooms and common areas, collaborate in any office, and access business applications from wherever
they are. Power over Ethernet (PoE) enables the switch to send power over the network cable to
power wireless access points and simplifies the wireless deployment. Gigabit Ethernet speed helps
ensure that your employees have the bandwidth and performance they need to make the most of
mobile productivity. And with embedded security, your employees can work with confidence, knowing
that only authorized users can access the network and network applications.
Unified communications. The Cisco 500 Series provides QoS features to enable you to prioritize
delay-sensitive traffic in your network and let you converge all of your communications solutions –
such as IP telephony and video surveillance – over a single Ethernet network. Cisco offers a complete
portfolio of IP telephony and other unified communications products designed for small businesses,
and Cisco 500 Series switches have been rigorously tested to help ensure easy integration and full
compatibility with these and other vendor products.

Network Switch vs. Router Primer
Switches and routers are the building blocks for all business communications, from data to voice and video to wireless access. They can improve profitability by enabling your company to increase productivity, trim business expenses, and improve security and customer service.
What is a network switch and what is a router? The two pieces of equipment look similar and perform some similar functions, but each has its own distinct function to perform on a network.
What is a Network Switch?
To understand basic networking, you first need to answer the question, "What is a network switch?"
Most business networks today use switches to connect computers, printers and servers within a building or campus. A switch serves as a controller, enabling networked devices to talk to each other efficiently. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save businesses money and increase employee productivity.
What is an Unmanaged Switch?
An unmanaged switch works right out of the box. It's not designed to be configured, so you don't have to worry about installing or setting it up correctly. Unmanaged switches have less network capacity than managed switches. You'll usually find unmanaged switches in home networking equipment.
What is a Managed Switch?
A managed network switch is configure able, offering greater flexibility and capacity than an unmanaged switch. You can monitor and adjust a managed switch locally or remotely, to give you greater network control. Storage Networks certified engineers are able to train, integrate, manage, and troubleshoot your network switches either on-site or remotely.
What is a Network Switch versus a Router?
Switches create a network. Routers connect networks. A router links computers to the Internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as a dispatcher, choosing the best path for information to travel so it's received quickly.
