EMC VNXe Compared with Dell, HP, and NetApp
The EMC VNXe OE has matured from a conglomeration of EMC FLARE (block) and DART (file) code (VNXe3100, VNXe3150, and VNXe3300) into a truly unified Linux code base (VNXe3200.) The VNXe Unisphere management interface is still largely wizard driven compared to the Unisphere for VNX, but the oversimplified “virtual disks” and “shared folders” have been replaced by “LUNS / LUN Groups” and “file systems.” With the introduction of features like Unified Snapshots with Redirect on Write Snapshot Algorithms, the EMC VNXe3200 is a strong contender against HP StoreVirtual, HP MSA, DELL Equallogic / PowerVault, and NetApp FAS.
Competitive arrays in the VNXe3200 class include:
HP P2000 / MSA2040 / MSA1040
HP StoreVirtual 4330 and 4530
DELL PowerVault (Fibre) MD3800F, MD3820f, MD3860F, MD3600F, MD3620F, MD3660F
DELL PowerVault (iSCSI and SAS) MD3200i, MD3200, MD3400, MD3420, MD3220i, MD3240, MD3620i
DELL Equallogic PS4100, PS6100 / PS6110, and PS6200 / PS6210
NetApp FAS2240
While the VNXe3200 is a Swiss army knife of storage, there are certain use cases where HP,DELL, and NetApp still lead. When evaluating storage, keep these key points in mind:
Protocols:
Are you looking for a file based or block based array? The VNXe3200 is a unified array offering both block and file storage in one box- no need for separate Windows / Linux file servers for document storage. The NetApp FAS2240 is also a unified array. HP StoreVirtual, HP MSA, DELL PowerVault, and DELL Equallogic are all block only. HP and DELL offer “file gateway” appliances (normally running Windows Storage Server) that attach to their block SANs, but these add extra equipment to your rack and management routine.
Interfaces:
The VNXe3200 ships with (8) 10Gb Ethernet ports standard. The ports are 10GBASE-T, using RJ45 connectors on CAT5e (and above) cable making 10Gb connectivity very affordable. The ports auto-negotiate down to 1Gb for customers that have not yet made the jump to a 10Gb network. The ports can be used for both file (NAS) and block (iSCSI.) 8Gb Fibre Channel ports can be added at an extra cost.
HP StoreVirtual and MSA2040 arrays offer 10Gb iSCSI, but use SFPs and optical cables. Most 10Gb switches today use SFPs, but for the small business, Netgear is driving the cost of 10GBASE-T down. SMB customers planning on future 10GB deployments may want to think hard about investing in an array using SFPs. The MSA2040 also supports 16Gb Fibre and 1Gb iSCSI (via copper RJ45 SFP). The interface is changed by swapping the SFPs because it has a Q-Logic FlexSuite mulit-host interface control module
DELL PowerVault and Equallogic also support 10GBASE-T in the MD3620i . MD3600i, PS6110 and PS6210 (note the 10s at the end.) However, port count is limited compared to EMC and DELL’s own 1Gb counterparts, making a pair of Ethernet switches necessary. 16Gb Fibre (MD3xxxF) and 12Gb FrontEnd SAS (MD3400) is available as well (faster than EMC), but these options must be chosen at build time and switching to iSCSI is not supported at a later date.
NetApp also has a modular interface architecture similar to EMC (mezzanine cards vs. EMC’s FlexIOs.) However, NetApp currently offers copper (twinax) and optical (SFP) 10Gb connectivity instead of 10GBASE-t.
Compare Expand ability and Auto-Tiering
Like most EMC storage, the VNXe3200 can be expanded via DAEs (Disk Array Enclosures) containing either 25 SFF or 12 LFF disk drives. These DAEs attach to the master enclosure, referred to as the DPE (Disk Processor Enclosure.) Inside the DAEs, you can mix 7200 RPM, 10K, 15K, and SSD (Flash) disks.
New to the VNXe3200 is the optional FAST Suite (Fully Automated Storage Tiering) where data automatically migrates to the most appropriate storage tier.
The HP MSA1040 / MSA2040 series expands similarly to the VNXe3200 via expansion JBODs. HP also allows you to mix drive technologies within the same enclosure. The MSA1040 does not officially support SSDs and neither the MSA2040 or the MSA1040 support auto-tiering capabilities.
HP StoreVirtual 4330 / 4530 arrays expand via NODES. You cannot simply expand capacity by adding 1-2 drives at time. Nodes in a cluster should be the same model or at least have the same capacity. Mixing nodes with different drive technology (10K, 15K, 7.2K) in the same cluster is not supported. Heterogeneous nodes can be mixed within a management group, however. Data must be manually migrated between clusters of different speeds, unlike with DELL and EMC where migration happens automatically. The HP StoreVirtual VSA is a bit of a different animal (actually quite a nice product in our opinion.) Contact us to learn more about how the VSA is more competitive with EMC and DELL auto-tiering technologies when properly configured.
DELL PowerVault scales similarly to the VNXe. MD1000 enclosures attach to the master MD32xx / MD34xx / MD38xx enclosures via a SAS backend. DELL allows you to mix drive types within the same enclosures and enclosures can have empty drive slots. Auto-tiering is not available. The newest MD3860i / MD3660i / MD3460 do support SSD caching, however, making these newest models comparable to EMC’s FAST Cache. (Contact us to learn more about FAST Cache vs. FAST.)
DELL Equallogic arrays are similar to HP StoreVirtual in that capacity is added via nodes (containing disks, service processors, and NICs.) The theory is that performance and capacity scale together since you purchase more RAM and CPU power as you add capacity. Most Equallogic arrays (PS4100E, PS4100XV, PS4110E, PS4110XV, PS6100E, PS6100X, and PS6100S) only support one drive speed and capacity in a single node. Auto-tiering of data (comparable to VNXe FAST) is performed by migrating data between nodes in a cluster. Unlike HP StoreVirtual, dissimilar nodes are supported in the same cluster. PS6100XS arrays are slightly different in that SSDs are mixed with spinning disks within the same enclosure so tiering is possible in the same enclosure on the “XS” model.
NetApp FAS2240 arrays are expanded via DS4000 expansion shelves like EMC. Flash Pools mix rotating disks with SSDs in “aggregates” and use the SSDs as cache, like EMC FAST Cache. NetApp does not support auto-tiering of data among other drive types, however.
Compare EMC VNXe, DELL, HP and NetApp Support Costs
When comparing SAN costs, you must factor in your expected service life and the associated support costs. While you might be able to stock your own spare parts and forego hardware support after a SAN product warranty expires, software support is another issue. EMC usually posts software and firmware updates for its arrays for 10+ years. Our old CX300 box was still receiving updates until 2013 for things like SMI-S providers allowing increased functionality in Microsoft System Center.
EMC’s support model on the VNXe3200 is the same as previous generation AX and VNXe support plans. You can purchase 3-5 years of support up front and pricing is very competitive with DELL, HP, and NetApp. With EMC, you must have an active support contract to download VNXe OE, Unisphere, and disk firmware updates. Support prices do increase as time passes. Pricing varies with hardware and software configurations- contact us to learn more.
HP MSA and StoreVirtual arrays ship with a 3-Year NBD Warranty and phone support, free of charge, when purchased via an authorized reseller. Carepacks can be purchased to expedite hardware replacement and extend the warranty past 3-years. As of 2014, an active warranty or CarePack must be held to receive firmware and software updates. Prior, HP allowed updates free of charge.
DELL PowerVault arrays ship a basic 5x10 support plan for 3-Years. Firmware updates are posted free of charge on DELL’s website. Equallogic arrays must ship with a support plan and an active support plan is required to gain access to the Equallogic support portal for software and firmware updates.
