EMC VNX OPTIONS FOR DATA PROTECTION
Customers have different use cases—and one size—one technology or product does not fit all needs. These different use cases or requirements are why EMC offers several different solutions. HP, IBM, and NetApp data protection options are similar to the EMC VNX Options briefly described here. Customers have a choice in applying the most appropriate protection technologies from EMC to their particular RPO and RTO objectives.
Many customers are familiar with traditional data protection and replication technologies that take point-in-time copies once a day or at specific times of day. The data is backed up usually at the same time each day, and this becomes the recovery point. If data loss occurs 12 hours into the new backup period, any new data created since the last backup is lost, since the system can only be rolled back to the last recovery point. Nightly full backups every 24-hours are sufficient for many businesses—and for the remote or branch offices of larger enterprises. Nightly full backups with 8-10 hour or better recovery times can be fulfilled with traditional backup technologies such as Networker or NetBackup.
Though commonly used for replication use cases other than disaster recovery, snapshots and clones provide a smaller recovery-point window, usually as short as three hours—and are widely used for re-purposing data without disrupting production for decision support, test/dev, and DR testing. EMC offers SnapView and SnapSure for business replication needs satisfied by snaps and clones.
For more stringent needs, array-based disk mirroring technologies can preserve up to the last write over synchronous connections to provide zero RPOs and very short recovery times. Proven sufficient and effective for most enterprise-class business needs, EMC offers array-based disk mirroring including MirrorView and RecoverPoint.
Continuous protection is a more recent approach that leverages time-indexed recovery points to protect both data and applications. To provide continuous protection, EMC offers RecoverPoint for local and remote replication—or primary and secondary site protection. RecoverPoint takes data snapshots every few seconds, creating unlimited recovery points. Users can also bookmark recovery points to recover back to specific points in time, such as the close of a quarter or a pre-patch state. It is also possible to create application-aware bookmarks to assure recovery to any business-process event in time.
Customers have a choice in applying the most appropriate protection technologies from EMC to their particular RPO and RTO objectives.
EMC Software LICENSE Suites AND PACKs
The VNX Series Systems require a simple license key to enable software features. Each VNX comes with a unique serial number that can easily activate license files via an Online Portal during the installation process. The Base Software package consists of Unisphere, the Protocol licenses, File De duplication and Compression, and Thin Provisioning. For simplification and improved efficiency, EMC has packaged its premium software into five suites and two packs.
Optional Software Suites can be ordered individually. To facilitate ordering and lower costs, the software suites are bundled into all-inclusive “packs.” The Total Efficiency Pack includes all suites, and the Total Protection Pack includes all protection suites.
